Mildred Sawyer was referred to GMSC by a family friend. She states “becoming a GMSC Corpsmember was the best choice of my life. I wanted and needed a change and that’s exactly what I got. I learned the true meaning of giving back and being truly committed to earning something you want.” After completing the GMSC program, I obtained full-time employment with Miami-Dade County Public Housing and Community Development Department. I am currently working toward obtaining my A.S. degree in Business Administration at Miami-Dade College. However, my plans do not stop there; with what I’ve learned, I plan to give back to the needy and others who need help. Greater Miami Service Corps has given me more than they could ever know. They were there when I needed a helping hand to change my life and gain a new direction towards achieving my goals.
Emily Alejo, a mother of two indicates her journey towards receiving her high school diploma was very challenging. After having her first child, she was unable to continue in traditional school. She remained at home for almost a year until one day, her friend told her about opportunities at the Greater Miami Service Corps and School for Integrated Academics and Technologies (SIATech). She states that was the turning point in her life. She was able to finish her credits at SIATech while serving her community through GMSC. She earned AmeriCorps scholarships to assist her with college, and graduated with her high school diploma within eight months. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in Miami-Dade College to pursue a career in the medical field. She was also able to gain full-time employment with Miami-Dade County. She states “my dreams do not stop here and I am now more than ever determined to be the best I can be. Without the help and encouragement from SIATech and Greater Miami Service Corps, I know that I would not have come this far. I would therefore like to say thank you for all that you have done to help me achieve my goals.”
