US Army Reserve
When Colin Donaldson, now a Sergeant in the United States Army, heard about the Greater Miami Service Corps, he felt he could learn some job skills, earn some money and continue working on his diploma. Upon his graduation from GMSC, he had earned his high school diploma. After graduating, Colin worked at the Haitian Television Network and volunteered at the Intel Computer Club House. He also enrolled in Miami-Dade College. In September 2005, he enrolled in the Army Reserve as a cook specialist. Colin states, “The people at the Corps care…they supported me not just while I was in the program, but even after I graduated. They helped me to achieve my goals.” Sergeant Colin’s s awards include Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Volunteer Corps Certificate of Appreciation, and Army Achievement Medal. Sergeant Colin’s short-term goals are achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. His long-term goals consist of completing a bachelor’s degree in the field of Film, returning home to Miami, Florida, where he will re-enlist into the Army Reserves continuing his military carrier; join a local Law Enforcement agency, and start an after-school program for the youth of the local community.
I started in the GMSC in 2016. I was able to sharpen my mental toughness skills, resume, and interviewing skills. I obtained an internship with a government trust agency Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust (MDEAT). A year later, I was hired full-time in the department. While enrolled in the Greater Miami Service Corps, I received help paying for my books and tuition to gain my Associates at Miami-Dade College. I am an Exam Technician in the Human Resources Department with Miami-Dade County, an entry-level position to my career path as a Human Resources Administrator. I will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Supervision and Management. I am very fortunate to have experienced the benefits of the GMSC youth program and services.

Elmer Garcia is the third member of his family to attend and graduate from GMSC. After relocating from Guatemala, he was uncertain of what he should do. When he first arrived, his Mom told him about the Greater Miami Service Corps. However, he decided to work for an oriental trading company. After three years without opportunities for advancement, he decided to try the Corps. While enrolled, he earned his general education diploma, increased his English literacy and obtained full-time employment through an internship placement with Energy Programs Division of Miami-Dade County Community Action Agency. He states, “As a result of the program, I am now enrolled in Miami-Dade College to pursue an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration. The Corps helped put me on the path to achieve my goals.
